Beekeepers Gather on Fifth Anniversary

Beekeepers can testify to the transformation of the honey sector in Georgia.

In November, more than two hundred beekeepers gathered to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the founding of the Georgian Beekeepers Union now uniting ten associations, thirty one private companies and nearly 7000 individual members. The visit included a tour of Api Geo the largest exporter of honey to the EU, who have been upgrading their facilities this year including being able to blend large batches of honey, over twenty tonnes per batch, and state of the art laboratory facilities.  The company director showed more than hundred beekeepers how the honey is being aggregated, tested, homogenized and prepared for export to France. Government representatives from Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, National Food Agency and FAO also participated in the event.

The Georgian Beekeepers Union (GBU) is facilitated by the Mercy Corps Georgia implemented ALCP2 programme, which is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in cooperation with the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) and Sweden.
