Georgia and Jordan Share Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE)

On April 16th-20th, 2018 the Alliances Caucasus Programme (www.alcp.ge) funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC and implemented by Mercy Corps in Georgia, hosted a study tour from the Arab Women’s Enterprise Fund (AWEF). The tour included Jordan Municipality Mayors, WEE coordinators and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture of Jordan to share ALCP’s experience on Women Economic Empowerment integration through M4P approach and best practices used.

The delegation visited the ALCP main office, Agriculture Project Management Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia, Women’s Rooms in Bolnisi, Ninotsminda, Keda and Batumi; two cheese factories: Tsalka +  LTD in Gumbati Village and Tsipora LTD in Uraveli Village; a wool processing enterprise Wool House in Akhaltsikhe, agricultural programme I am a Farmer  in Batumi; Ajarian Chamber of Commerce- Association of Business Women of Ajara; the Ajarian Beekeeping Business Association and the Batumi Botanical Garden in total covering Kvemo Kartli, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Ajara regions, which allowed for comprehensive information delivery. 

“The on field projects visited have been a real example for the commitment for making markets work for the poor. All of the participants gained insights from study tour to inspire our projects work that will empower women in return” - Reham Gharbiyeh, the AWEF Country Director.

The Mayors of Jordan municipalities are now more incentivized to open Women’s units in their municipalities and incorporate approaches of Georgian Women’s Rooms in their work. Besides, the idea of women lead wool enterprise and working with mid-sized dairy enterprises became of participants special interests.

Bio Security Points - Coming Soon

Construction of the two Bio Security Points (BSP) on the Animal Movement Routes in Marneuli and Rustavi is now on a final stage.

Each 2000 square meters point is already concreted and fenced and the sheep dips and cattle showers are ready and the site office in place. The 50 ton galvanized water Tanks imported from the UK are installed. For both points the NFA will hire staff including a veterinarian.

Georgia Interests at Swiss Show

The OLMA trade show – a Swiss Agricultural and Food Fair has been held every year since 1943 in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The year’s 74th exhibition was held from  8-18 of October. 623 exhibitors and 375000 visitors attended the show.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) was the one of the exhibitors this year. The SDC created 8 country stands including that of the Swiss Cooperation Office for the South Caucasus.

Bio Security Build-up
Construction of the two Bio Security Points on the Animal Movement Route is now in full swing in Marneuli and Rustavi municipalities. In a month since works commenced, the main ground works have been completed. 

The NFA announced a tender on September 28th for the construction of two further Bio Security Points of the same design in Dedoplistskaro and Sighnaghi municipalities. The tender winner company was identified on October 5th.

Advent of Agro-Journalism

For the first time in Georgia 6 universities will soon offer specialized courses on agricultural journalism.

The universities in Batumi, Kutaisi, Gori, Telavi, Akhaltcikhe and Caucasus International Universities in Tbilisi who already offer academic programmes on journalism, mass communications and agricultural education will now add agro journalism. The course prospective tutors have just had Training of Trainers for two days.

The First Women’s Room in Ajara

Following work in KK and SJ  the Women’s Room model is being replicated in Ajara region, where Ajara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) is proving an invaluable partner by opening the first Women’s Room at the Association of Business Women of Ajara (ABWA).

The “Women’s Room” will open up opportunities for the ABWA in terms of coordinating activities, trainings, advocacy raising meetings and information sharing. All these will contribute into stimulating women’s entrepreneurship and economic empowerment and attracting more women members to the association.

Minister Publicizes Animal Movement Route Work

The Ministry of Agriculture through the National Food Agency has posted details of the construction of the six Bio Security Points on the Animal Movement Route, the construction of two of which have started this month.

Minister of Agriculture Otar Danelia stated.

“It is very important that concrete steps toward the development of the livestock sector have been taken. Rehabilitation and modernization of the Animal Movement Route has started. Building modern standard Bio Security Points will promote animal health protection and will reduce the spread of animal disease” – he said.

Golden Scoop for Sustainable Agriculture in Georgia June 20th 2018

The Georgian documentary Jara has just won the Golden Green Award 2018 at the Deauville Green Awards International Film Festival, for the best production in the category of Sustainable Agriculture, the International jury selected the finalists in fourteen categories  from four hundred and fifteen films produced worldwide. Jara was screened during the festival in Deauville in the presence of the professionals and the press. The Deauville Green Awards is one of the most prestigious festivals in Green Film Production worldwide launched in 2012. For the last seven years, the festival’s mission has been to enhance information films, spots and documentaries on sustainability, eco-innovations and social responsibility. Furthering public understanding and education. Each year the festival draws five hundred films from five continents, with four hundred professionals of film in attendance. The Sustainable Agriculture category in which Jara has triumphed awards films highlighting integrated farm management, sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry which produces food without damaging  nature. This is where Jara, with its outstanding story about traditional Jara beekeeping, small scale livestock farmers and the shifting boundary between human habitat and wild nature of Ajara stood out and was  awarded gold.   Jara was premiered by EcoFilms in Tbilisi in 2017. The main backer of Jara was the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) through the Mercy Corps Georgia implemented Alliances Caucasus Programme (ALCP) within a consortium of public bodies and conservation organizations including World Wildlife Fund and Caucasus Nature Fund. Sheep Shearing Festival in Armenia

On Saturday, June 9 representatives of the ALCP team (www.alcp.ge) and a wool processor Tamar Tsikarishvili from Akhaltsikhe, Georgia attended the Sheep Shearing Festival after being invited by SDC sister project SDA Armenia which took place in Syunik Animal Market, Syunik region. The festival aimed to promote sheep, local produce, traditions and culture of Syunik and Vayots Dzor regions (Please see the Link). The festival included guest sheep shearer Danny Wilson from Great Britain who conducted master classes for festival participants and visitors. During the meeting with program representatives he talked about the specifics of hand shearing and gave useful information about benefits and downsides of both shearing with blades and electric machines. Team members welcomed the opportunity to further build on the ties between the ALCP and SDA.
Transforming Agri Journalism Success to Armenia

Knowledge is a power and the ALCP is committed to facilitating high quality agri information transfer to rural farmers strengthening the field of journalism in Georgia and Armenia. On 25th-29th of April an international agricultural journalist was commissioned to deliver trainings to 11 Armenian TV and press journalists and 2 heads of the Department of Journalism of Armenian universities in the Caucasus International University in Tbilisi.
